Kalasagar Competition

Maritime Portraits through Digital Lens

The Maritime History Society is an academic initiative of the Western Naval Command, Indian Navy. Founded on 12 May 1978, this institute is the brainchild of Late Vice Admiral Manohar Prahlad Awati, PVSM, VrC (Retd). The society aims to explore, study, promote and showcase India’s rich maritime heritage and wisdom through books, seminars, research, newsletters and various other maritime-themed events.

Kalasagar is an annual competition held as a visual arts tribute to the Maritime Domain. Kalasagar 2022 is planned as a photography competition titled “Sea-scenes: Maritime Portraits” on the theme of Maritime Portraits through Digital Lens.

The Indian subcontinent has been a treasure trove of culture and heritage since prehistoric times. India’s wide coastline, geographically advantageous harbours and coastal infrastructure within the Indian Ocean Region have all contributed to the maritime character of our country. The vibrant maritime landscape encompasses coastal communities and practices, coastal architecture, seascape and much more. The thematic setting of this photography competition on maritime portraits aims to bring forth an individual’s perspective of the maritime landscape through one’s observations. While conventional photographs of the sea-scape are welcome, photographs with an eclectic take on the maritime character will have an edge.
